Family Education Programmes

Engaging Families

Foundation of Light supports families through a range of fun, interactive courses to help parents, grandparents and carers support their child’s development, whilst strengthening the family bond.

The 10-week course focuses on various topics relating to child development, health and well-being, mental health awareness, healthy cooking in partnership with the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation, maths, English and finance.

Each session involves a range of classroom-based and physical activities delivered by highly qualified tutors and coaches, using the power of football and the Sunderland AFC brand to inspire and support families.

At the end of the term, everyone who has taken part in the programme is invited to the Foundation of Light’s state of the art facility, the Beacon of Light, for a graduation event to celebrate their learning achievements.

Learners will also be given the opportunity to progress into a range of Foundation of Light programmes, depending on your goals, including our Back in the Game employability programme, Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

Courses include:

  • Supporting your child’s curriculum: Numeracy
  • Supporting your child’s curriculum: Literacy
  • Introduction to Industry and Enterprise
  • Disability Awareness
  • Safe Families
  • Health and Fitness

Jamie's Ministry of Food

We have teamed up with the world-renowned celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s Food Foundation and Ministry of Food to promote healthy eating in schools as part of a community outreach programme.

The 10-week course allows both children and adults to practice their culinary skills, understand how to adapt recipes and to build an individual’s confidence to cook for themselves and their families.

Foundation of Light has delivered over 20 courses in schools – both primary and secondary – community rooms and children centres, reaching over 120 families, with participants ranging from four to 76 years old.

To find out more about our Family Learning courses, email sarah.leadbitter@foundationoflight.co.uk or call 0191 5634777.

The style of delivery from our team ensures participants receive opportunities to develop their game and decision making skills aided by age relevant coaching

Ian Dipper, Evening and Weekend Coordinator.
