SAFC chief joins charity bike ride
Sunderland AFC Chief Operating Officer, Steve Davison, will join cyclists from across the region to raise money for the club’s official charity, Foundation of Light, as part of the Fit for FoL Cycle Challenge this summer. Over the last 10 years, hundreds of people have taken part in the Foundation’s annual Cycle Challenge which has raised tens of thousands of pounds to support communities across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham, with cyclists taking on routes in cities across Europe. Once again supported by Grafton Group, the annual fundraiser is being kept local this year, in line with current COVID-19 restrictions. Starting and finishing at the Foundation’s home, the Beacon of Light, on Stadium Park cyclists will take on an 85-mile circuit around Tyne and Wear, climbing 4,600ft, in one day. Steve Davison said, “I am really looking forward to taking part in the Fit for FoL Cycle Challenge. I’ve heard great things about the Foundation’s cycling events previously and they are well known for their camaraderie amongst the riders as well as being a tough physical challenge. “The club is at the very heart of our community and this is a great way for us to support the Foundation’s work whilst raising vital funds for life-changing services across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham.” Foundation of Light Head of Events, Jemma Dowson commented “This year’s challenge is shaping up to be a little different from our events in previous years. “We may not be able to get away on our annual overseas trip but we’ve got a fantastic event planned which is set to really challenge our riders, whilst being really good fun, and a great opportunity to see the beautiful sites across Tyne and Wear.” Everyone taking part in the challenge will receive breakfast, lunch, celebration drinks, an award, a branded Foundation of Light musette as well as support from a bike mechanic and support vehicle on the day. The Cycle Challenge takes place on Saturday 10 July 2021 and is open to all abilities but must be completed on a road bike. Participants can secure their place through a £50 deposit and raise a minimum of £200. Steve’s wife Janet will also be taking part in the sponsored cycle, and the couple are aiming to raise £1,000.
