Foundation supports Active Disability Month

4 September 2018

Foundation of Light is joining forces with The Tyne & Wear Disability Sport Forum to give those with disabilities the opportunity to take part in a range of sports.

Throughout September a host of activities will be taking place to mark Active Disability Sport Month with organisations across the North East offering taster sessions in football, archery, wheelchair basketball, tennis, cycling and more.

Making Moves, the Foundation’s disability coaching team, delivers fun, exciting and challenging weekly activities which ensure young people and adults across the North-East can enjoy sport, an active lifestyle and build friendships.

We are proud to support Active Disability Sport Month by highlighting the sporting opportunities available to those with disabilities in the North East.

We are committed to not only creating and providing these opportunities, but also raising awareness and tackling the stigma associated with disabilities.

Kevin Darke, Inclusion Coordinator

Mental Health Sport Programme (Multi-Sports)

  • Beacon of Light (SR5 1SN)
  • Mondays 2pm-3pm

An opportunity for over 18s to take part in a range of sporting activities including Football, Futsal, Badminton, Table Tennis and more!

Mental Health Sport Programme (Football)

  • Beacon of Light (SR5 1SN)
  • Wednesdays, 10am-11am

If you are aged over 18 and want to improve your general health and fitness levels in a fun and sport related way, this programme is for you.

FREE Female Football Disability Programme

  • Beacon of Light (SR5 1SN)
  • Wednesdays, 2pm-3pm

Run on a ‘turn up and play’ basis, the programme is open to women of all disabilities with a main emphasis is on enjoying sport, with opportunities for those who wish to progress into local leagues.

Every Player Counts

  • Goals Soccer Centre (SR3 4AG)
  • Thursdays, 2.30pm-3.30pm

Sessions are delivered weekly for young people and adults aged 16 years and above.
Players can progress into weekly league competitions and are welcome to attend as individuals or as a team.

Saturday Football Club

  • Beacon of Light (SR5 1SN)
  • Saturday’s, 10am-11am

Provides those with disabilities (and their siblings) aged 5 and above with an opportunity to develop and participate in small-sided games and fun activities within a safe and positive environment.

David Marrin, Assistant Director at Tyne & Wear Sport, added: “Research has shown that seven out of 10 disabled people want to do more exercise but a barrier to taking part is lack of awareness of opportunities.

“Therefore, we felt it was important to work with our partners and other activity providers to highlight what is on offer and use September as the month to promote of the great work that is being done to make sport and physical activity more accessible.”

Foundation of Light’s Making Moves is supported by the PL/BT Disability Fund.

A calendar of events has been created listing all of the activities on offer, which can be found at www.tynewearsport.org/active-disability-month. Or find out more on social media by following #activedisabilitymonth.
