The Beacon of Light will welcome futsal teams from across the North East as they battle for a place in the 2018-19 FA Futsal Cup.
Open to male and female adult teams, the Futsal Cup provides players aged 16 and over with the opportunity to take part in a national competition which starts with a regional stage featuring grassroots teams.
The winners from the qualifiers will then enter a draw with teams from The FA National Futsal League, including Beacon-based Sunderland Futsal Club, meaning they may get the opportunity to test themselves against some of the country’s top futsal teams.
The North East regional competition will take place at the Beacon on Saturday 20th October 2018 (Men’s) and Saturday 12th January 2019 (Women’s).
We are thrilled to be hosting the FA Futsal Cup regional qualifiers at the Beacon of Light.
We are working hard to raise futsal’s profile in the North East and by hosting competitions such as this, future international matches as well as being Sunderland Futsal Club’s home court we are certain the sport will continue to grow in popularity.
Registration for the FA Futsal Cup is now open and teams can reserve their place by completing the entry form at www.thefa.com. The entry fee is only £30 per team which must be paid on registration.
Completed forms must be returned by Tuesday 5th October 2018 (Men’s) and Friday 14th December 2018 (Women’s).
What is Futsal?
Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small sided football game normally played on a flat indoor pitch with hockey sized goals and a size four ball with a reduced bounce which creates an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing.
Many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with supporting their footballing development including Pele, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Xavi, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The game is played to touchlines and all players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball over head-height. Games are usually 20 minutes per half, played to a stopping clock (similar to basketball) with time-outs permitted.
Earlier this year, Foundation of Light announced Sunderland Futsal Club as the charity’s official futsal partner for the 2018-19 season.
The partnership has seen the club move into the Beacon of Light providing players, volunteers and supporters with world-class facilities for training and FA National Futsal League home games.
Sunderland Futsal Club kick off their FA National Futsal League Division Two campaign against Wigan Futsal Academy this Sunday 16th September (2pm) at the Beacon of Light. Entry is FREE to spectators.
