The Beacon of Light will be illuminated purple to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
The home of the Foundation of Light is joining other landmarks across the city in lighting up on Wednesday 3 June to back the Stand Up To Racism campaign, demonstrating solidarity with black and minority ethnic communities against violence and systematic racism.
Stand Up To Racism are an anti-racism campaign group and their latest effort to protest against racism is called Take the Knee
It will begin on Wednesday at 6pm and asks people to get on one knee on their doorsteps.
The action of “taking the knee” is inspired by American footballer Colin Kaepernick who in 2016 started a kneeling protest.
There are local Stand Up To Racism groups in towns and cities across the UK.
They host events and have a range of resources on their website.
The Foundation of Light regularly works with anti-racism charity Show Racism the Red Card, alongside former Sunderland AFC skipper Gary Bennet, who is a patron for the organisation.
In partnership, sessions are held to educate local youngsters about equality and diversity.
