Better Skills Better Chances, delivered in partnership with County Durham housing provider Livin, is giving tenants the opportunity to receive support, a chance to learn, gain qualifications and have the opportunity to upskill.
Working virtually at the moment and face-to-face in the future, this is available to anyone aged 16 and above and opportunities fall under three categories.
Support for employability and health and wellbeing
Delivery will consist of a mixture of group training and workshops, combined with one-to-one sessions with mentors who tailor delivery to suit each individual tenants needs.
Suitable for people with physical and mental health disabilities, long term unemployed,ย on the verge of engaging with the youth justice system and those who are involved with youth justice/probationary services.
Each participant will receive a welcome interview, initial assessments, information, advice and guidance before being assigned to a dedicated mentor who will provide support with personal guidance, goal setting and support to overcome barriers before employability support is introduced which will include:
- CV, application forms and interview technique online training workshops
- Work ready job clubs
- Confidence and motivation workshops, including substance misuse and mental health awareness
- Basic IT skills through partnerships with Make it Click and Google Good Things Foundation
- CSCS mock testing followed by test and green card.
- Entry 2 Award in Skills for Independence and Work
- Level 1 Award in Home Cooking Skills
- Level 1 Award/Certificates in Personal and Social Development
- Self-Employability workshops
- Sector specific workshops
- One-to-one individual support
Basic skills provision
Short-term support for those who have either been made redundant (due to the pandemic) and those who are currently unemployed and at risk of long-term unemployment.
Programme delivery can include:
- Level 1 Award/Certificate in Work Skills
- Health and Safety in the Workplace
- Manual Handling Safety at Work
- Food Safety and Hygiene
- Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Digital Skills for Employment
- Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
- CSCS mock testing followed by test and green card.
- Labour market information
- Information, Advice and Guidance
- Work placements
- Links to partner employers with mock interviews, workplace tours, work placements and employment opportunities
- CV, application forms and interview technique online training workshops
- Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
- Level 2 Certificate in Understanding the Safe Handling of Medication in Health and Social Care
- Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care
- Entry level to Level 2 Maths and English
Upskilling
Supporting those who are already in employment, but in low-paid, low-skilled roles.ย This programme will facilitate higher level qualifications to support progressions into higher paid employment opportunities.
Programmes could include:
- Level 2 certificate in ICT Skills
- Level 2 Certificate in Caring for the Elderly
- Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care
- Level 3 Certificate in Understanding the Principles of Dementia Care
- Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Team Leading
- ILM Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management
- Level 3 Award/Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
- Entry Level to Level 2 Maths and English
